WINTER TRAINING 2020

We are thrilled to announce that, because we’ve got a baby coming into the world just weeks before, we have curated two very special workshops for Winter Training this year.

Kicking us off in January is a workshop with the stellar ALEX RIGG of OCEANALLOVER, who will be digging into the very bones of performance. This will be followed by four wild days with our extra special guest, dancer and improviser KATIE DUCK.

These two artists create uncompromising work that is fearless in scope, and both constantly push the edges of how to think about performance. We feel so honoured to have them both with us this January.

And baby-permitting, we’re hoping to poke our heads in too!

 

If the skeleton isn’t working, how can a body stand up?
with Alex Rigg of OCEANALLOVER
3-5 January, 10-5pm daily, CCA

This three-day workshop focuses on finding new ways to use the body to generate and reveal the initial bones of your own material. How can you use your body as a physical manifestation of your subconscious, or even preconscious, thought?

With movement as a catalyst, you’ll have a chance to play, experiment and uncover your own native material, and make the first marks on a blank canvas that might shape all form that follows. Be prepared to move, explore, play, and work!

ABOUT ALEX

Alex has been making live events since 1982. If there is a common thread to his work, it must be a strong need to push boundaries around, to set foot on unknown soil and generally to play with our concepts of art outside its accepted form. Recent productions include Transfigured, Orographic, and Sea Hames.

He has trained as an archeological illustrator, a drystone dyker, blacksmith, fine-artist, dancer, timber-framer and costume maker/designer. Drawing on influences from Butoh, Body Weather, sculpture and live art, his performance work is off-beat and either enigmatic or impenetrable….decide for yourself. Alex regularly teaches around Scotland.

with KATIE DUCK
7-10 January, 10-5pm daily, CCA

“The combination of moving, seeing, hearing, feeling and deliberately volunteering to expose myself in front of an audience alters my perception of time, space and emotions. What I do for a living is an induced neuron madness.”

In her workshop, Katie takes a microscopic view on the role improvisation plays in a live performance combining her background in the performing arts with her curiosity for advances in brain studies, music and movement research. She guides performers through physical exercises that highlight how the eyes and ears affect movement choices.

The performer/ dancer /actor/ musician needs to be the best listener in the theatre in order to read the sounds in a passing time. If you read the sounds in time you can write, reveal and give presence to a sonic body.

ABOUT KATIE

Based in Amsterdam, Katie has been a professional performer and maker since the early 1970s. She has been an influential figure in how she has placed improvisation as an intricate element in composition and performance internationally, inspiring generations of performers, musicians and performance makers.

Katie was head of choreography at Dartington College of arts (senior lecturer) in the late 1980s. She joined the staff at Amsterdam Hogeschool voor de kunsten in 1991 teaching movement research, improvisation, composition and technique and founded the improvisational dance and music company Magpie in the 1990s with whom she toured internationally. She has collaborated with renowned dance and improvisation music artists from all over the world.

Alongside her vocational studies, Katie’s research has led her toward social studies, cultural studies and brain studies. She believes that her research must not be validated by way of academic speak alone but rather on her insistence to hear, see and take part in the practice.
